Milkshake or Mushroom?
We often can “logic” our way through any situation. By using logic, we are often using shame to convince ourselves to choose the “right” option (which in my work tends to be the option everyone else wants you to choose rather than what you want to choose).
For this exercise, you need to think of your absolute favorite thing to eat/drink/ingest. Once you have that, think of the opposite. What is something that you absolutely despise eating/drinking/ingesting? Now, imagine ingesting the favorite thing, enjoy the sensation, think about what you like most about it. BAM! All of a sudden it’s the item you despise.
Did you feel that?
That flip in your stomach, clenching of your jaw, or tensing of your muscles? That’s your body’s signal to you.
For decisions in which you’re not sure what to do, such as attending a family gathering because you know you’re expected to versus not attending. Check in with this “gut” sense of yours. If it feels like “Milkshake” (your favorite item) then it most likely aligns with what you truly feel. If it feels like “mushroom” (the item you despise) then your body is trying to tell you something that your brain is trying to ignore.
If after checking in with yourself you find that you want to change your choice, that’s okay! You are allowed to change your mind, especially if you’ve connected with your “gut” sense about it. If you’re wanting to live a more aligned and attuned life, I encourage you to practice this exercise!
